The City of Black River Falls had been the county seat of Jackson County since 1853. The first courthouse was erected in 1857. The present
original structure was built in 1878. In November, 1937 the cornerstone was laid for an addition to the north of the original structure. The circuit courtroom in the original structure is now used as the county
board room, law library and offices. The county courtroom in the 1937 addition was converted to the Clerk of Court's offices with the construction of the law enforcement center in 1986. The Jackson County jail
was built in 1878 to the north of the courthouse, was in use until 1960 when it was replaced by a new jail. The new 1986 Law Enforcement Center replaced the 1960 jail with one of the finest, most modern law enforcement
