The Jackson County Zoning
and POWTS Department

The Jackson County Zoning, Planning and POWTS Department is responsible for administration and enforcement of comprehensive zoning, shoreland, subdivision, floodplain and sanitary ordinances and related chapters of the Wisconsin Administrative Code and Statutes that are in affect in all unincorporated areas of the County.  This includes review and issuance of permits, compliance inspections, complaint investigation and maintaining records of all these activities.  The office is committed to offering assistance to any landowner and should be the initial contact of any person who wishes to develop their property.

Currently, there are fourteen townships regulated by the County’s Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance.  The goal of the land use program is to utilize land in harmony with neighboring uses and natural resources, by protecting the health, safety and welfare of our citizens as well as our environment.  The participating zoned townships are:

Adams, Albion, Bear Bluff, Brockway, Cleveland, Franklin, Garden Valley, Knapp, Komensky, Manchester, Melrose, Millston, North Bend and Springfield.

The POWTS (Private Onsite Wastewater Treatment System) Program enforces Jackson County's Private Sewage System Ordinance, Chapters COMM 81- 85 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code and Chapter 145 of the Wisconsin State Statutes.  This program promotes and protects public health and safety by assuring the proper siting, design, installation, inspection and management of private sewage systems and     non-plumbing sanitation systems.  The program provides assistance to landowners for the replacement of failed private sewage systems through the Wisconsin Fund grant program.
